Weekly Territory Planning: A Simple Framework for Better Account Prioritization

Managing a sales territory requires constant prioritization.

Every week brings new information. Accounts change. Business priorities shift. New opportunities appear while others lose momentum.

The challenge is deciding where to invest your time.

The most effective territory planning approach starts with understanding that not every account deserves equal attention.

Account prioritization should consider:

Business need

Timing

Access to decision makers

Existing relationships

Potential impact

A common mistake is focusing only on account size. Large companies can be attractive, but without urgency or engagement, they may not create meaningful progress.

A better question is:

Where can my effort create the biggest change?

Once priority accounts are identified, the next step is defining clear actions.

Effective actions move an opportunity forward. They create new understanding, relationships, or progress.

Examples include:

Connecting with a new stakeholder

Learning more about a business initiative

Validating technical requirements

Preparing for an important conversation

Weekly planning also requires reviewing what happened.

Which accounts progressed?

Which strategies worked?

Where did time go without results?

This feedback loop improves decision making over time.

I share a more detailed version of this process in my main article, “Weekly Territory Planning and Account Prioritization.”

Strong territory management is not about doing everything. It is about consistently focusing on the right things.
